The former president is accustomed to walking into gatherings with energetic audiences applauding to music. "I've never entered a room so silent before," he stated when addressing the nation's top military leaders at the Marine Corps Base Quantico. "Don't laugh. Don't know if you're permitted to do that." He was attempting to elicit some laughter, an old performance technique to rouse a unresponsive audience. "Listen up, Just have a good time."
