What We Know Concerning the Attack at Brown University

Law enforcement are hunting for a assailant who shot dead two students and wounded nine others at the university in Providence.

Police report the suspect as a man wearing black clothing who escaped by running, and a stay-inside order is active for the region near the university.

This attack pushes the tally of incidents with multiple victims in the US to 389 for this year, based on an independent analysis tracking such incidents.

What Happened?

The gunman opened fire in a academic room at approximately 16:00 local time on Saturday at the Barus and Holley building at the eastern part of the school.

An academic stated to a news source that the attack had taken place during a pre-exam class for her course.

Details on Those Affected

Two young adults were fatally shot, and a nine more people are in hospital.

Medics say an individual is in a grave condition, six are "stable but critical", and two others are less severely hurt.

The names of those affected have not been disclosed, but the institution's leader told the media that all the those affected were members of the student body.

"This is a moment that we prayed never would come to our community. It is profoundly tragic for all of us," she said in a release.

There is no firearm visible in the footage, and his identity is concealed.

Investigators also say a firearm was not located in a sweep of the structure.

Police do not currently know if the shooter was a member of the university, but a senior officer said the person was a male who was in black attire and seemed in his 30s.

"We're using every tool possible to locate this person," he said.

One suspect was taken into custody before investigators concluded they were not involved in the incident and let go of them.
