The golf superstar is determined to redirect discussion of last month’s Ryder Cup from the main talking point of poor crowd behavior to the outstanding performance of Europe’s achievement.

Back-to-Back Victories for Team Europe

Luke Donald and his team secured consecutive team victories after building what turned out to be an unassailable position within the first two of the event’s three days.

Crowd Behavior Overshadows the Competition

The reference point for the host venue, though, has been disgraceful crowd behavior; including significantly towards Rory McIlroy. The Masters champion’s wife was struck by a thrown beverage thrown from the galleries at a certain moment, with the golfer personally subjected to abuse throughout.

In the wake of Europe’s win, Rory stated the sport should be proud to seek excellent conduct from players and spectators. Some believe this presents the sport with a dilemma as it looks to engage youngsters.

“You shouldn’t make your sport to be unwelcoming to newcomers,” McIlroy added. “I absolutely get that. But you also don’t want newcomers entering the game and ruining long-standing customs and values of what this game stands for or what it upholds. I think there must be a balance.

“I certainly think that the sport can grow but it can develop where the people that are coming into the game still honor and acknowledge that this is a little bit different than maybe other sports. I say it in America, golf doesn’t need to be the football. It isn’t meant to be these other sports. Golf is golf, and that’s fine.”

Expanding the Sport Responsibly

“I’d love additional viewers to watch golf. That would be fantastic. But I would be keener in encouraging more people to take up golf, and I think when people participate, then they understand and they can acknowledge what golf is, what it symbolizes, and the necessary manners and the standards that you need to adhere to when you engage in golf.”

European Squad Reunion in Delhi

Rory has fellow squad members Shane Lowry and Viktor Hovland for companionship on his maiden visit to the tournament. Donald is also in the lineup, with the captain still considering whether he will captain Europe for what would be a third time, at the next venue in 2027.

“I think what the captain has done the last two Ryder Cups has transformed the captaincy within Team Europe,” stated Rory. “The effort and the commitment that he has devoted to the recent period, it’s been absolutely amazing.”
