Weather Balloons Employed to Smuggle Tobacco Products Closed Vilnius Airport
Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
