The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That
Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
